Britain’s JLR to build XJ model car in India

Jaguar Land Rover’s Indian production now includes XJ saloon luxury model car to make it competitive in the luxury car market. This will be the third model to be built in JLR’s Indian plant in Chakan, Near Pune. The announcement was made at the Delhi Motor show this week.

JLR’s Indian plant has already been producing Land Rover Freelander 2 and Jaguar XF and now adding XJ as its third product from the company in the UK. Tata bought UK’s Jaguar Land Rover in 2008 and since then the company has shifted its focus to India’s growing demand for luxury cars.

Ralf Speth, the CEO of Jaguar Land Rover is also cautious about the move and told the BBC that JLR is absolutely committed to manufacturing cars in Britain.

“We do have a parent company that is Indian and without this parent company, JLR wouldn’t exist. But JLR is both English and British. It’s the compelling combination of British design and engineering that differentiates us around the world. Look at the huge investment that we make in Britain, and at the way we hire people, and you can see we are committed to Britain.” he said.

Jaguar has also launched its C-X17 sports crossover concept vehicle at the same show in Delhi for Indian buyers. This ultra-luxury car was introduced in September 2013 at the Frankfurt Motor Show and has received good reviews for its advanced technology features.
