British Passport holders will be able to obtain visa on landing in Indian airports

British passport holders will soon be able to obtain a visa on landing at several Indian airports. They would be asked to fill a form online before arrival to the country. This facility is a boon to several UK Indians who hold British passport.

Although a definite date has not been announced, officials have said that the new regulations would be introduced “as soon possible”.

Earlier, this facility was introduced to residents of Germany, France, Spain, Russia and Poland but was not offered to British travellers. It was suggested that it would only be offered to British Nationals only when a reciprocal system was introduced to those who are seeking entry to the UK. But the Indian officials implemented this facility so as to increase tourism to the country.

India is a country with rich wealth of historical and natural attractions. Unfortunately, the nation has failed to attract tourism up to the expected level – the tortuous visa process has been cited as one of the main causes, with visitors complaining about bureaucracy required to gain entry to the country. Last year, the cost of an Indian visa for a British traveller also increased significantly from £38 to £82, not including a processing fee of £10.50.

Last year, rife publicity about rape attacks in India , including the attacks on foreign tourists has dented India’s image overseas. The proposed overhaul could redress that balance, with the Indian government tourism minister saying they want to double that number by 2016.

The range of airports where the visa on arrival would be available is also set to be extended. Up to this point, visas were only available at major international airports including Delhi, Chennai, and Mumbai. Now, the on-arrival visa facility will be available in airports like Goa, Gaya and Amritsar, which also attract many overseas tourists.

British tour operators to India welcomed the move. Ashley Royston of Virgin Holidays said: “As India rolls out the red carpet and makes it quicker and easier than ever for foreign tourists to arrange their paperwork, we hope that this development will encourage Britons to visit this exciting and enticing destination.”
