Popular South Indian actress Kalpana dies of heart attack at 51

Versatile South Indian actress Kalpana Ranjani, also the elder sister of award-winning actress Urvashi, suddenly died of heart attack in Hyderabad on 25th January. Kalpana is best remembered for her comic roles in South Indian film industries, particularly, in Malayalam cinema.

According to initial reports Kalpana had reached Hyderabad on Sunday afternoon for shooting a bi-lingual film (Tamil and Telugu), and was staying at a hotel in the city.

She was rushed to Apollo Hospital early on Monday morning after she was found unconscious. Doctors tried to revive her. They suspect that she died due to a heart attack. All her near and dear ones, have advised her not be alone as she was a heart patient. But Kalpana was affirmative and remained positive that she would be fine.


According to reports, her sister Urvashi is on her way to Hyderabad and the body will be brought back to Kochi on Tuesday on a 10:30 flight.

It is believed that Kalpana was suffering from heart valve-related problems for which she was undergoing treatment at the Amrita Hospital in Kochi. Kalpana also recently has had a liver transplant. Despite all the health troubles, she had bravely sported a smiling face and also has made others laugh.

Kalpana began her career as a child artist in the Malayalam film ‘Vidarunna Mottukal’. After making her debut as a mainstream actor in the 1980 film Pokkuveyil directed by G. Aravindan, she went on to star in several critically acclaimed films and her portrayals as a comedienne were appreciated by critics. Her Tamil debut was through the 1985 released successful film Chinna Veedu opposite K. Bhagyaraj. Her other memorable films include Sathi Leelavathi (1995) and Kaliveedu (1996)..
