Tata Group raises funds for Tata Medical Centre, Kolkata at St. James’ Court, A Taj Hotel, London on 28th February

18th February 2014 – On 28th February, The Tata Medical Centre Trust will hold a charity event at the newly rebranded St James’ Court, A Taj Hotel, London, in order to raise funds for the urgent expansion of the Tata Medical Centre in Kolkata.

Special guests will be welcomed to St. James’ Court’s Edwardian room for a dinner created by Chef Sriram Aylur of the Taj Group’s Michelin starred Quilon.  A number of items will be auctioned throughout the evening, including a painting inspired by Madras, a piece of exquisite Madras jewellery as well as Jaguar experiences,  to raise money for the worthy cause and contribute to the evening’s fundraising target of £100,000.

During the evening, guests will be entertained with the famous South Indian parody “Zimbly Madras” and performance by legendary Indian singer and philanthropist Usha Uthup. This iconic musician, who has performed in front of Prime Ministers and Presidents throughout her career, will liven up the soirée with a medley of her most renowned songs.

Sridevi, one of India’s most successful actresses from the Southern State of Madras, and her renowned Film Director husband Boney Kapoor will grace the event with their presence.

About the TATA Medical Centre, Kolkata

According to The Indian Cancer Registry a large number of specific cancers come from the East of India. The lack of advanced facilities for treatment and care which has adversely affected the lives of thousands of cancer patients in this region led The Tata Group to gift Rs 350 crore (approx £34 million) non-profit, world-class cancer hospital in Kolkata. This was inaugurated by Mr. Ratan Tata in May 2011.

50% of the beds in this hospital are reserved for the under-privileged and the hospital currently houses 167 beds. Almost 30,000 patients have been treated since 2011 and with hundreds seeking urgent medical assistance on a daily basis, The Tata Medical Center hopes to raise funds to help accommodate and care for more.
